About the Contest

Founded in 2003, this annual British Columbia-wide Small Business BC Business Plan Contest is free to enter and open to all new and existing small businesses.

The purpose for this Contest is to support and recognize B.C. entrepreneurs in their endeavours to start and grow successful small businesses. Last year more than 170 entrepreneurs entered plans in areas as diverse as retail trade, manufacturing, technology services, arts, entertainment and recreation.

We feel that a strong small business sector supports vital economic and social growth, with tangible benefits to all members of a community. That is why the 6th Annual Business Plan Contest will be held under the theme, Economic Development for Vibrant Communities, focusing on the positive contributions small businesses make in communities of all sizes. 

True to business principals, the Contest continues to grow and evolve. In addition to the Business Start-Up and Business Growth Award categories, we have incorporated the following two new bonus awards and a finalists "presentation" component:

• Community Leadership Award: a "bonus" award that will be presented to the Contest participant that demonstrates the leadership in managing the risks and opportunities posed by climate change.
• Going Global Award: a "bonus" award that will be presented to a Contest participant who demonstrates the most viable import/export business plan.
• Finalists Business Pitch Presentation: finalists will have an opportunity to present their business plan “pitches” to judges, following which judges will have an opportunity to pose questions to finalists.

It is possible for a Contest participant to win the Community Leadership Award or Going Global Award, and a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place prize.

Key Dates:

• Contest Launch: Tuesday, September 16, 2008
• Contest Deadline - All Business Plans Due: 12noon, Tuesday, December 16, 2008
• Finals - Business Pitch Presentations: February 9-13, 2009
• Awards Ceremony: Tuesday, March 3, 2009

The Contest is hosted by Small Business BC.
